Originating from the Indonesian Island of Sumatra, these chickens are prized for their elegant blue-tinted feathers, long flowing tails, and the multiple spurs on their legs, a distinctive feature of the Sumatra breed.
While the Splash Sumatra is not officially recognized by the American Standard of Perfection, it remains a popular choice among rare breed enthusiasts in the United States. These chickens are especially valued for their rarity and the challenge they present to breeders. The Chicken Coop Company is proud to offer this rare variety, with a breeding program that typically produces a mix of 1/3 black/blues, 1/3 blues, and 1/3 splash. When you place an order, you will receive baby chicks that are likely to develop the stunning splash coloration.
Please note that the splash variant does not carry the genetics for the dark skin face seen in the blue and black Sumatra varieties. Despite this, the Splash Sumatra remains a captivating addition to any flock, admired for its beauty and unique heritage.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What are Sumatra chickens good for?
The Sumatra may be reared as an ornamental breed or for showing. Hens are good layers of white or cream-coloured eggs, of which they may lay about 130 per year. They are very good sitters, and may be used to hatch eggs of other breeds, including water-fowl.
What color eggs do Sumatra chickens lay?
Sumatra hens lay about 100 small, white, or lightly tinted eggs per year. (Ornamental birds are not generally known for their egg or meat production.) They can also get broody, although they are generally non-setters, and can be excellent mothers. They are good winter layers.
How rare are Sumatra chickens?
Sumatras are an exceedingly rare breed of chicken with a personality closer to that of a wild game bird than a domestic chicken: they are thought to be closely related to the jungle fowl of the Far East.
Do Sumatra chickens go broody?
Sumatras are generally not aggressive, however, cockerels are known to be agitated during breeding season. Hens do go broody and are considered good mothers. They are active and watchful birds. Sumatras are seasonal birds, in the way that they breed, which is generally around the early Spring and lasting a few months.
