This is the Hen House and the Run Together!

So why does it say 6+ chickens? There are factors to consider what breed are you getting, are you able to let them free range? We recommend taking a look at the measurements and seeing what you feel comfortable with.

Keep in mind the chickens share nesting boxes and stand side by side on the roosting rods!

The Orpington Lodge Chicken Coop with a run for 6+ chickens is AWESOME! Below is a picture of the three Chicken Coops we built all in the same picture. The Orpington Lodge chicken coop is the 2nd largest. We wanted you to see the size difference and be able to compare.  Keep in mind you can purchase additional run extensions or hen houses separately! Also, note each coop has a door to the run and then an additional door at the end of the run. The Orpington Lodge and the Rhode Island Homestead XL chicken coop have a door under each nesting box and the Leghorn has an additional door under the hen house as well.

The dimensions of this insulated chicken coop with a run for 6+ chickens are:

Hen House: 55 inches wide 29 inches long.  Two 30 inch roosting rods and one 33 inch roosting rod are included in the Hen House.

Total Weight:  150 lbs

The original Orpington Lodge Chicken Coop is rock solid! One of the things you will notice is that our run panels EXTEND under each nesting box. More than providing additional space for your hens, this is CRITICAL as it gives support for the nesting box (this may seem minor, however, without the support the nesting boxes will sag after a short period of time)

Run Extension Options:

We offer two run options. Our original run, which is approximately four feet high, and a walk-in run that is six feet high.

Original Run - 4ft high

31.5 inches wide x 37.5 inches tall x 85.5 inches long.  One 30-inch roosting bar and one 33-inch roosting bar are included in the run extension. The total number of roosting bars is three 30-inch roosting rods and two 33-inch roosting rods between the run extension and the coop.

Walk-In Run - 6ft high

39.5 inches wide x 74 inches tall x 101.5 inches long, has two 37.5-inch roosting rods and one 36-inch roosting rod.
PLEASE NOTE: This run is wider, taller, and longer than the original 4ft run extension.

A few additional points to consider:

  • The Orpington Lodge chicken coop with a run for 6+ chickens has additional vents providing excellent airflow in the hen house.
  • Each panel has four additional diagonal wooden support pieces
  • Prop open LOCKING side vent windows (most coops sold online have sliding windows)
  • We use a heavy plastic flashing that secures above both nesting box roof panels
  • Each roof panel has a heavy plastic liner to insulate and further weatherproof
  • We use strong wire mesh with small holes so no predators can enter
  • We use heavy-duty hardware
  • EVERY piece is labeled and our instructions are thorough and written by us =)
  • We also sell hen houses and runs separately allowing you to customize and expand your setup
  • A lot of space: Hen House: 55 inches wide 29 inches long Run Extension: 31.5 inches wide 37.5 inches tall 85.5 inches long, 5 roosting rods, 15 inches of clearance under the hen house, etc.
  • THICK nesting box dividers
  • Well constructed ladder
  • Sliding door to keep your hens safe during the night
  • Doors under the hen house for easy access to the space under the hen house. This allows for easy cleaning and for letting the girls in and out.
  • Run has doors. This is to make cleaning the run a cinch and helps in free-ranging.

Final Suggestions:

Given that the Orpington Lodge Chicken Coop is constructed from wood and will be exposed to the elements around the clock, we highly recommend that you stain, lacquer, or paint it. The initial stain applied serves as a base coat and isn’t intended for long-term protection against the weather. During transit, it's common for parts to get dinged or scratched, so you may need to touch up your coop before applying stain or paint. Once your coop is set up, it's a good idea to anchor it down, which can be as simple as placing a stake on each side of the hen house and run area. As much as we have tried to predator-proof our coops, you know your area best and you may want to put predator-proof wire mesh around it, or put pavers. Always double-check the hardware and latches to ensure everything is tight and secure. If you live in an area with larger predators, such as bears, you might also want to consider installing an electric fence around the perimeter.
